Research

The process from sketch up to crysis was far less complicated, but allowed less versatility.
Errors aside, the ability for sandbox editor to update the model when changes are made in max allow the model to be modified constantly and easily improved.
The process from sketchup to crysis was relatively straight forward, everything worked fine once i knew how to do it. On the other hand with max to crysis, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didnt. Whether this is from lack of knowledge, problems with the setup on the computer, or issues with the model, i am not entirely sure.
I guess at the end of the day, at least i had a complete environment using Sketchup, which is far from what i achieved with max.

I cant manage to get any textures into the game regardless of what i try, i just get error messages. I think i spent too long modelling the town hall in solid works.
My original plan to challenge navigation through the town hall station was to have elements of the station bouncing around the environment, by reducing the gravity and importing the elements to do this seperately to crysis. These items would include display screens, notice boards and the direction boards (eg arrow to george street exit). This would not only disorientate the user but they would also have to dodge the bouncing objects.

Week 6

Reflection on Arup Presentation

This was quite an interesting display of ideas. Integrating the processes of managing such large projects in such great detail is a complex task. The idea of simulating wind, solar, traffic (vehicles and people), and the buildings carbon footprint are probably most closely related to the work we are doing on Town Hall at the moment. Looking at organisation and integration in a broader sense, we can take alot away when dealing with the integration between different programs, eg SolidWorks, SketchUp, 3DS Max and Crysis. The importance of planning can save loads of time and money and avoid many headaches when coordinating different elements of a project, whether Exp2 or something as complex as the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort in Singapore.

Statement on Realism

Through my investigation of the Town Hall Station i discovered the realism of the threat of terrorism and how people suddenly become very uneasy when they see people straying from their usual activities in a train station. People are very cautious and paranoid about what we are up to.

My investigation involved mostly photographing, sketches and plan drawings, it became more and more difficult as the station filled up with people during peak and rush times. The realism of it all is that no matter what time you go there, there will always be someone who thinks you are up to no good. Conditions cant always work in your favour, you have to work with the current situation or you wont get anything done at all.

On my second trip i attracted a bit more attention for some reason, but then after security got to us we were told to get a visitor pass from the office. Even with this, we had problems with security.... and a few thugs who wanted to get their hands on our camera, suggesting we included them in a photo of a bench moments after they had walked off.

No matter what you do, if you stray from the norm, you attract some form of attention, even though your actions may be perfectly reasonable and within the law.

EXP2 The Porosity of Subterranean Sydney

Some methods of measurement might include:

Photos
Distometer (laser measuring device)
Tape measure
Sound Recorder
iphone applications
Existing records of measurements (floor plans)
Reports

To really uncover all elements of the Town Hall, a combination of the above should be used. I would say that documenting the feel of being in the station is the most difficult. That dirty, grimy feeling of standing in there for even 5 minutes; the caustraphic feeling, when you are surrounded by a million and one people trying to go home; the diversity of the people that come from all area of Sydney.

The distometre will be used to measure up the perimetre and basic shape of the Town Hall and as many elements as possible. It is hard to accept that it is not going to be perfectly accurate and things may not line up so well when it comes to modelling it in SolidWorks.

I think taking pictures to remind me of the position of the elements in the staion would be helpful, also to capture images that will be used as textures and applied in 3dsMax. It will also assist in positioning textures on the final model.

Modes used to create Machinima Documentory

My machinima will be recorded in realtime within my virtual environment. I'll use Fraps to capture the video and Windows Movie Maker to create and edit the machinima using subtle transitions between the clips with short text explaining the scene and purpose. The machinima will then be compressed using Movie Maker ready to upload to youtube and embed in my blog.

Porosity: The revision of public space in the city using public art to test the functional boundaries of built form. The term porosity describes the nature of the edge condition, which exists between the skin of architecture and the public spaces of the city. Investigation redefines our perception of the limits of both architecture and public space. (Richard Goodwin)
