Statement on Realism

Through my investigation of the Town Hall Station i discovered the realism of the threat of terrorism and how people suddenly become very uneasy when they see people straying from their usual activities in a train station. People are very cautious and paranoid about what we are up to.

My investigation involved mostly photographing, sketches and plan drawings, it became more and more difficult as the station filled up with people during peak and rush times. The realism of it all is that no matter what time you go there, there will always be someone who thinks you are up to no good. Conditions cant always work in your favour, you have to work with the current situation or you wont get anything done at all.

On my second trip i attracted a bit more attention for some reason, but then after security got to us we were told to get a visitor pass from the office. Even with this, we had problems with security.... and a few thugs who wanted to get their hands on our camera, suggesting we included them in a photo of a bench moments after they had walked off.

No matter what you do, if you stray from the norm, you attract some form of attention, even though your actions may be perfectly reasonable and within the law.

EXP2 The Porosity of Subterranean Sydney

Some methods of measurement might include:

Photos
Distometer (laser measuring device)
Tape measure
Sound Recorder
iphone applications
Existing records of measurements (floor plans)
Reports

To really uncover all elements of the Town Hall, a combination of the above should be used. I would say that documenting the feel of being in the station is the most difficult. That dirty, grimy feeling of standing in there for even 5 minutes; the caustraphic feeling, when you are surrounded by a million and one people trying to go home; the diversity of the people that come from all area of Sydney.

The distometre will be used to measure up the perimetre and basic shape of the Town Hall and as many elements as possible. It is hard to accept that it is not going to be perfectly accurate and things may not line up so well when it comes to modelling it in SolidWorks.

I think taking pictures to remind me of the position of the elements in the staion would be helpful, also to capture images that will be used as textures and applied in 3dsMax. It will also assist in positioning textures on the final model.
